Washington Lawyer - April/May 2018 - 17

HQ BY THE NUMBERS
FROM GROUNDBREAKING TO COMPLETION
October 27, 2015 - Bar signs agreement to purchase
land and construct a new building

June 6, 2017 - Bar breaks ground at future address
February 12, 2018 - We're moved in!
SIZE MATTERS

8 storeys high
100,000 sq. ft.
6 conference rooms
4 classrooms + member
connections space

27 wired spaces for live and
recorded programming

Broadcast studio with full audio,
video, and editing services

OWNING VS. RENTING

$25M
The media services also will generate revenue for the Bar. The studio will offer a
full array of audio and video production services to members and nonmembers
alike. (See more under Broadcast Studio.) Its great location and flexible classroom
and conferencing space, combined with broadcasting ability, makes the new Bar
building highly desirable - especially because the
Bar can certify training programs as CLEs.
"You can imagine any glorious thing you want, and this building will be able
to do it," says Suzanne Peck, the D.C. Bar's chief information officer who was
brought on board to shepherd the Bar's integration to a high-tech infrastructure. Prior to her tenure at the Bar, Peck was an award-winning senior technology and operations executive for several Fortune 500 companies and the
D.C. government.

SAVED

OVER

CLOSE TO THE COURTS
4 blocks north of the D.C. Courts

YEARS

5 blocks north of the E. Barrett
Prettyman Federal Courthouse

In this new era, Peck says, never will staff or members be deterred from
doing something because the technology doesn't support it. "No one will
be turned away."
Not only will the new production facilities provide revenue, but going
from renter to owner is projected to save the Bar more than $25 million over
30 years. Already since purchasing the property, Velazquez says, the property
has gone up in value, creating instant equity - the purchase price was $72
million, and it recently was appraised at $90 million. That savings can be
used for more member programming and legal services to the community,
while maintaining the Bar's position in the lowest quartile of dues rates in
the country.
As of February 12, 2018, the Bar's new home is open for business. Spagnoletti
encourages members to check it out. "It's your space. You're paying for this.
Come and use it."
